Celtic Spirituality – Exploring the prayer life of St
Patrick and St Columbanus

The fifth century bishop, Patrick, wrote the only autobiography to survive from Celtic times. In his ‘Confessions’ he describes his conversion and his life of prayer. The sixth-century monk, Columbanus, wrote many letters and scribes recorded his sermons, which we will take some time to explore.

Preparatory reading: ‘Saint Patrick: the Man and his Works’ by Thomas O’Loughlin, SPCK, £4.99. (The lengthy introduction outlines how Celtic monks viewed their vocation and their world)
