Exploring Icons of the Spiritual Canticle of St John of the Cross
Resources:
1. Introduction to a talk on the contemporary icon of John of the Cross written by Carmelite sisters in Harissa, Lebanon. The icon now hangs in the priory chapel in Segovia, Spain. The icon is a fine example of sacred art coming from the Carmelite tradition that draws deeply on the canon of symbols from Orthodox iconography.
2. A selection
of the small, border icons that illuminate The Spiritual Canticle by John of
the Cross. They are arranged in a format helpful for meditation - an icon, the
relevant verses from the poem, and a portion of text from John’s commentary
on the poem. The guiding prompts described in the introduction can be used as
an aid open up inner experience of the icons.
