Movements in the Soul – a study of the practice of Recollection
This is a collection of resources from a series of six reflections led by Julienne Mclean and Viv Stacey from October 2007 to March 2008.
The text for study was a selection from The Third Spiritual Alphabet – a practical guide for a simple, Christ-centred, inner spirituality, by Francisco de Osuna (c.1492-c1540). His teaching on recollection formed the thought of Teresa of Avila, the great Carmelite teacher on prayer in the Spanish golden age of mysticism.
‘This prayer is called ‘recollection’ because the soul collects its faculties together and enters within itself to be with its God’
Teresa de Avila

Exploring Icons of the Spiritual Canticle of St John of the Cross
Resources to accompany the talk given by Viv Stacey on 17 April 2010:
1. Introduction to a talk on the contemporary icon of John of the Cross written by Carmelite sisters in Harissa, Lebanon. The icon now hangs in the priory chapel in Segovia, Spain. The icon is a fine example of sacred art coming from the Carmelite tradition that draws deeply on the canon of symbols from Orthodox iconography.
2. A selection of the small, border icons that illuminate The Spiritual Canticle by John of the Cross. They are arranged in a format helpful for meditation - an icon, the relevant verses from the poem, and a portion of text from John’s commentary on the poem. The guiding prompts described in the introduction can be used as an aid open up inner experience of the icons.
